The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Dearest Elena,

I am really excited to share this next holiday with you. It is one so many people look forward to all year. It is Christmas, December 25th. This is a very important day because it is the day that Jesus was born and Christians believe he is the Son of God. We celebrate by giving presents to those we love and appreciate, as a way of saying, “I love and am grateful for you.”

Our book for this holiday is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. It so charmingly expresses the spirit of Christmas which is a lot about loving and giving, family and friendship.

Today’s book is about these same ideas, expressed through the friendship between the Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, as they talk and walk through the woods. They talk about such things as Kindness, Love, Fear, Being There For Each Other and even about Cake. They love and take care of each other, and say dear and loving things like “Being there for each other means that when we are stuck, we are there to unstick us.” The Horse talks about ups and downs in life and that love makes you feel safe, like you feel at home.”

In the end, the boy realizes what is really important. The mole says, “Cake. “No, it is to love,” says the boy. “And to be loved,” says the horse. This book is so full of wisdom, dearest Elena.

Now, what has Mommy learned from the friendship between these characters? She has learned that the most important thing in this world is love and loving the people in your life. If kindness is what you strive for in all that you do, then you and your heart are all love and that is the fuel that makes the world go around.

When you boil it all down, it really is that simple. Mommy knows that her home is the love she shares with you and Daddy. No matter how scary life can get, always remember that Mommy and Daddy are here to protect you, just like the characters in our story.

One day you will have your own family and you will love them and be the home for them. It is the circle of life where love flows for eternity. On Christmas we acknowledge how much we love one another. And your Mommy loves you from the depths of her heart, a love that grows stronger with every breath and beat of her heart. With Mommy and Daddy, you are always in a place where you are loved and safe. You are home.
